Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer and it is the widely used e-Commerce site, with its headquarters based in Seattle, United States. It is a pioneer in the e-Commerce industry and one of those few companies that introduced the idea of online shopping, which had literally changed the whole buying and selling scenario. Amazon.com was initially launched as an online bookstore in the year 1995 and very soon it gained popularity and they diversified the products to a wide range like CDs, DVDs and Electronic products. Today, almost after 2 decades of its launch, it had grown as the largest e-Commerce site in the world with products in every possible category, like food, toys, jewelry, clothing, software, games, electronic gadgets and of course books. Not just in the retail industry, Amazon had also ventured into manufacturing its own consumer electronic products like Amazon Kindle e-book readers, Kindle Fire tablets, Fire phone and also Fire TV.
Launch and Growth
Jeff Bezos, the founder of this e-Commerce giant, opened a book store called Cadabra in the year 1994 and the same company went online in 1995 in the name Amazon. Today, Amazon had grown multiple folds with a customer base of around 30 million people from all over the world. It has 13 separate retail sites for different countries like United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, China, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and India already. And there are talks that the sites for the South East Asian countries like SriLanka are in progress and will be launched soon. It has its customer services centers spread across the world in 14 different countries and its software development centers in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa.
Products and Services
Amazon had carved a niche for itself in the e-Commerce world with its extensive products and services. It had become an unbeatable king with its wide range of retail products and its outstanding consumer electronics. It’s Android tablet – Kindle Fire and its newly launched Fire TV set top box are already a huge success in the market. Following these, it had also made an entry in to the smartphone market with its Fire Phone recently. Apart from these, Amazon had also made a mark in the digital content. It launched its own music store called Amazon MP3 which became a huge success. And its Amazon Appstore for the Android devices is another noteworthy milestone for the company.
Amazon had also acquired a gaming company called Reflexive Entertainment, and this company developed games for Mac and Kindle readers. And with an objective of developing more innovative and fun-filled games, Amazon had made yet another acquisition in the gaming industry, which is a company called ‘Double Helix Games’.
Drone Delivery
Recently, Amazon had it big in the news for its automatic, human-free, same day delivery system using drones. If you are seeing a white, four-propeller device that is equipped with camera and buzzing at your door step, do not panic – It might just be carrying something that you have ordered in the Amazon few hours ago. Though it had raised a controversy, this drone system is much to the benefit of the customers.
